about me
My name is Solomon. I am also a Doctor of Philosophy, the love of Greek wisdom. In the tradition I was raised in, a wise person is one who sees what is being born. Oy.
O-oy.
Pretty soon now, I'll be relieved of having to carry the wise man's burden. I'm about 80; 79 by my documents, but it's 80, if my life as an unborn baby is counted. Time for a blog to impart some octogenarian stuff, like reflections, recollections.
I was delivered at Dortmund, the largest metropolis in all Westphalia; which remains devoted to the maxims of its famous philosopher, Prof. Panglos, the tutor of Candide; whose strange experiences in many countries pale compared to mine. Panglos showed that this is the best of all possible worlds.
Another famous Westphalian, Dr. Friedrich Engels, had been delivered a century before me at Barmen, 20 miles southwest, in the valley of the Wupper. He advanced, with his buddy Karl, the philosophy of dialectical materialism; which led them to predict that the contradictions inherent in the prevailing mode of production will inexorably lead to an even better world. So if an entry in this blog seems too upbeat, you may want to attribute it to my Westphalian origins.
But if you don't feel better after reading an item, I probably just heard the latest news.

(The above had originally been meant for the profile item "about me". But having missed the (1200 character) limit, I had exceeded it, thus had to cut; not nearly as easy as keeping it short in the first place. One of the cuts I knew would amount to bad English, and I had to worry that the instructor of a writing course I had taken at the West End Community Center would see the blog. She already had a stroke, and I don't want to be responsible for another. So I'm moving it here in the original version; which also removes other limitations.)
